Industrial design protection covers the two- or three-dimensional appearance of a product, including features such as:
- shape, lines, contours;
- colors;
- texture/materials;
- ornamentation.
Design protection generally does not cover:
- features dictated solely by a product’s technical function, and/or
- features necessary to allow connection/interconnection with other products (where applicable under design-law principles).
Registrability requirements

- Individual character
Filing and priority
- First-to-file principle applies.
- Paris Convention priority may be claimed (typically within 6 months for industrial designs).
Examination
- Design applications are typically subject to formal examination (rather than full substantive examination of novelty/individual character).
Office actions may be issued for formal deficiencies.
Term and renewals
Initial term: 5 years from the filing date.
Renewable in 5-year increments up to a maximum of 25 years total.

- application form;
- representations of the design (views);
- description (if required/used);
- power of attorney (if represented);
- priority document(s) (if priority is claimed), with translation if required.
